History

The history of the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones is a fascinating tale of innovation, determination, and a quest for the perfect listening experience. The journey began in 2010 when the founder of AfterShokz, Bruce Borenstein, was inspired by the use of bone conduction technology in military communications. The concept behind bone conduction technology is simple yet ingenious: it relies on the transmission of sound waves through the bones of the skull, bypassing the eardrums and directly stimulating the inner ear. This approach not only offers a different listening experience but also allows for situational awareness, as the user can still hear ambient noise.

The first step in creating the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones was to overcome the initial skepticism surrounding bone conduction technology. It was essential for the team to prove that this method could deliver high-quality audio while maintaining comfort and style. Over the course of several years, they experimented with various materials, designs, and configurations to optimize sound quality, reduce sound leakage, and increase comfort.

In 2012, the first AfterShokz bone conduction headphones were launched, garnering attention from audiophiles and fitness enthusiasts alike. However, the team continued to refine their technology and design in pursuit of perfection. After countless iterations, the culmination of their efforts led to the release of the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones in 2021.

The Aeropex model combined the best aspects of its predecessors, featuring a sleek, lightweight design, impressive battery life, and most importantly, outstanding sound quality. The incorporation of advanced bone conduction transducers and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity further enhanced the listening experience, making the Aerope headphones a true game-changer in the audio industry.

Today, the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones stand as a testament to the power of innovation and the relentless pursuit of excellence. They have garnered a loyal following among athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, and audiophiles, who appreciate the unique blend of comfort, safety, and sound quality that these headphones provide. As bone conduction technology continues to evolve, the future of the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones remains as bright as the minds behind their creation.

How’s the sound quality?

As an audiophile, sound quality is a critical factor when evaluating headphones, and the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones do not disappoint in this regard. The bone conduction technology employed in these headphones offers a unique and enjoyable listening experience that sets them apart from traditional headphones.

Bass:

The bass response in the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones is surprisingly robust for bone conduction headphones. While it may not provide the deep, thumping bass that some in-ear or over-ear headphones deliver, the Aeropex headphones produce a well-rounded and balanced bass that is satisfying without being overwhelming. The bone conduction technology allows the bass to be felt physically, providing a tactile experience that enhances the overall listening experience.

Midrange:

The midrange in the Aeropex headphones is clear and detailed, offering excellent vocal reproduction and instrument separation. The bone conduction technology ensures that the sound is transmitted directly to the inner ear, providing an intimate and immersive listening experience. As a result, vocals and instruments are accurately reproduced, allowing users to enjoy their favorite tracks with clarity and precision.

Treble:

The treble in the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones is crisp and well-defined, delivering a bright and lively sound signature. The high-frequency response is smooth and free of harshness, ensuring that the treble remains detailed without causing fatigue or discomfort during extended listening sessions.

Soundstage:

One of the most intriguing aspects of the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones is the soundstage they offer. Due to their open-ear design, the headphones provide a more expansive and natural soundstage than traditional closed-back or in-ear headphones. The bone conduction technology adds to this effect, creating an immersive and spacious listening experience that allows users to feel more connected to their music and environment.

Sound Leakage:

One potential concern with bone conduction headphones is sound leakage. However, the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones are designed to minimize this issue. While there might be some minor sound leakage at higher volumes, it is significantly less than what you would experience with traditional open-back headphones.

In summary, the sound quality of the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones is impressive for bone conduction technology. The headphones deliver a well-balanced audio experience with a satisfying bass response, clear and detailed midrange, crisp treble, and an expansive soundstage. While they may not provide the same level of bass impact or noise isolation as traditional headphones, their unique listening experience and situational awareness make them an excellent choice for users seeking an innovative and enjoyable audio solution.

What about the energy efficiency and battery life?

Energy efficiency and battery life are crucial factors for users who want a reliable and long-lasting listening experience. The AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones have been designed with these considerations in mind, offering a solid battery life and energy-efficient performance.

Battery Life:

The AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones boast a battery life of up to 8 hours on a single charge, which is impressive for bone conduction headphones. This extended battery life ensures that users can enjoy their favorite music, podcasts, or calls throughout the day without worrying about running out of power.

Charging Time:

The charging time for the Aeropex headphones is relatively short, taking approximately 2 hours to fully charge. This quick charging capability ensures that users can get back to their listening experience promptly, minimizing downtime.

Energy Efficiency:

The AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0 technology, which is known for its low energy consumption and enhanced performance compared to previous Bluetooth versions. This energy-efficient technology allows the Aeropex headphones to maintain a stable connection while minimizing battery drain, contributing to their extended battery life.

While the Aeropex headphones do not come with a quick charging feature, their battery life, charging time, and energy-efficient Bluetooth technology make them a reliable choice for users who need a dependable listening companion throughout their day. Whether you are commuting, working out, or just enjoying your favorite tunes, the AfterShokz Aeropex Headphones deliver a long-lasting and energy-efficient audio experience.

Our Review for AfterShokz Aeropex

AfterShokz Aeropex. Basic questions, basic answers

  • What is the difference between AfterShokz and Aeropex?

It appears that there is a slight misunderstanding in your question. AfterShokz is the name of the company that manufactures bone conduction headphones, while Aeropex is one of their headphone models. If you meant to ask about the difference between the AfterShokz Aerope and the AfterShokz Aeropex, here’s a comparison of the two models:
    1. Design and Build Quality: Both the Aerope and Aeropex models feature a lightweight and comfortable design. However, the Aeropex model is designed with a slightly slimmer and more refined profile, resulting in a more comfortable fit and lighter weight.
    2. Sound Quality: The Aeropex model offers improved sound quality compared to the Aerope, with richer bass and reduced sound leakage. This is achieved through advancements in bone conduction technology and the use of PremiumPitch 2.0+, which enhances the overall audio experience.
    3. Battery Life: The Aeropex has a longer battery life, offering up to 8 hours of continuous playback compared to the Aerope’s 6 hours. This makes the Aeropex a better option for those who require extended listening sessions without frequent charging.
    4. Water Resistance: Both models are water and sweat resistant, but the Aeropex has a higher IP rating (IP67) compared to the Aerope (IP55). This means the Aeropex is more resistant to water and dust, making it suitable for more rugged outdoor activities and workouts.
    5. Price: The Aeropex is generally priced higher than the Aerope, given its improved features and performance. The price difference may vary depending on the retailer and region.
In summary, the main differences between the AfterShokz Aerope and AfterShokz Aeropex headphones are the design, sound quality, battery life, water resistance, and price. While both models provide a comfortable and enjoyable listening experience, the Aeropex offers more advanced features and better overall performance.

  • Which model of AfterShokz is the best?

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the AfterShokz Aeropex is widely considered to be the best model offered by the company. It features several improvements over previous models, making it the top choice for those seeking the best bone conduction headphone experience.

Key features of the AfterShokz Aeropex include:
    1. Enhanced Sound Quality: The Aeropex model utilizes PremiumPitch 2.0+ technology, which provides better bass response, reduced sound leakage, and overall improved audio performance compared to previous models like the AfterShokz Trekz Air (now called AfterShokz Air).
    2. Lightweight and Comfortable Design: The Aeropex has a slim profile and lightweight build, ensuring maximum comfort during extended listening sessions. The wraparound design provides a secure fit for various activities like running, cycling, or working out.
    3. Battery Life: The Aeropex offers up to 8 hours of continuous playback on a single charge, making it suitable for all-day use without the need for frequent recharging.
    4. Water and Dust Resistance: The Aeropex boasts an IP67 rating, meaning it is more resistant to water and dust than previous models, making it an excellent choice for outdoor activities and workouts.
    5. Bluetooth 5.0 Connectivity: The Aeropex features Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity for seamless pairing with your devices and a more stable connection.

It’s important to note that individual preferences and needs may vary. While the AfterShokz Aeropex is considered the best model in terms of overall performance and features, other models like the AfterShokz Air or AfterShokz OpenMove may be more suitable for those with different requirements or budget constraints. Always consider your specific needs and preferences when choosing the right model for you.

  • Are AfterShokz Aeropex good for phone calls?

Yes, AfterShokz Aeropex headphones are suitable for phone calls. They are designed with dual noise-canceling microphones that help reduce ambient noise and ensure your voice is clearly heard during calls. The open-ear design also allows you to maintain situational awareness, enabling you to have conversations without losing touch with your surroundings.
The bone conduction technology in the Aeropex ensures that you can hear the person on the other end of the call clearly, even in noisy environments. The Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity allows for seamless pairing with your smartphone, making it easy to answer and make calls directly from the headphones using the built-in controls.
While the Aeropex may not provide the same level of noise cancellation as dedicated over-ear headphones with active noise-cancellation technology, they are still a reliable and convenient option for phone calls, especially during outdoor activities or in situations where you need to stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Can I wear my Aeropex AfterShokz in the shower?

Although the AfterShokz Aeropex headphones have an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, it is not advisable to wear them in the shower. The IP67 rating means that the headphones can be submerged in water up to 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes. However, this rating does not account for the high-pressure water jets from a showerhead, which could potentially damage the headphones.
Additionally, wearing the Aeropex headphones in the shower may affect the sound quality and overall user experience, as the bone conduction technology relies on contact with your skin to transmit sound effectively. The presence of water could interfere with this contact and degrade the audio quality.
It’s best to keep your AfterShokz Aeropex headphones away from high-pressure water sources like showers to ensure the longevity and performance of the product. They are better suited for activities like running, cycling, or working out, where they can resist sweat and light rain.

  • Can I swim with Aftershokz Aeropex?

Yes, you can swim with Aftershokz Aeropex headphones. However, it’s essential to note that while the Aftershokz Aeropex headphones are designed with an IP67 water resistance rating, which means they can withstand being submerged in water up to 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes, they are not specifically designed for swimming.

Aftershokz offers a different model called Xtrainerz, which is designed explicitly for swimming and other water-based activities. The Xtrainerz headphones feature an IP68 waterproof rating and built-in MP3 storage, allowing you to listen to music while swimming without needing to connect to an external device.

If you plan to swim with Aftershokz Aeropex headphones, keep in mind that their Bluetooth connectivity may not work effectively underwater, and the warranty may not cover water damage if used in a swimming pool or other water-based activities. It’s always a good idea to check the manufacturer’s guidelines and warranty information before using any electronic device in water.

  • How do I reset Aftershokz Aeropex?

To reset your Aftershokz Aeropex headphones, follow these steps:
    1. Power off the headphones: Press and hold the multifunction button (the raised button near the charging port) for 3-5 seconds until you hear the headphones say “Power off” or until the LED indicator turns off.
    2. Clear pairing history: Start with the headphones turned off. Press and hold the “+” (volume up) and “-” (volume down) buttons simultaneously for about 5 seconds until you hear two beeps. This will clear the pairing history on the headphones.
    3. Factory reset: With the headphones still turned off, press and hold the multifunction button for about 10-15 seconds. The LED indicator will flash red and blue, and you’ll hear the headphones say “Welcome to Aftershokz” followed by “Pairing.” This indicates that the headphones have been reset and are now in pairing mode.
    4. Reconnect to your device: Turn on Bluetooth on your device, search for available devices, and select “Aftershokz Aeropex” from the list. Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the pairing process.
Keep in mind that resetting the headphones will clear their pairing history, so you’ll need to re-pair them with your devices afterward.
